(1)「rather＋形容詞＋名詞」における冠詞の位置. (a)不定冠詞はa rather tall manとrather a tall manの2通りがあるが，quiteではquite a tall manのみ. (b)定冠詞は常にratherの前に置く：the rather tall girl in the corner 隅にいるあの少し背の高い少女.
(2)ratherはfairlyと異なり，比較級やtooの前にも用いる：She is feeling rather better today. 彼女はきょうはいくぶん気分がいい／This racket is rather too heavy for me. このラケットは私には少し重すぎる.
(3)ratherはふつう好ましくない意味内容をもつ形容詞・副詞の前で用いる. ただしgood, well, pretty, clever, amusingの前で用いた場合はふつう強勢を置き，veryの意となる. ▼fairlyは好ましい意味をもつ形容詞・副詞の前に用いることに注意. ⇒FAIRLY[副]2
